Blue Ridge Sudbury School - Empowering Children for Life

Why Blue Ridge Sudbury School?

I learn in my own way…

  • I can have someone teach me something or I can learn on my own.
  • I like that I'm getting educated at the same time I'm having fun.
  • We can cook, play video games, read books, visit with someone, take a field trip, make up a new game, explore, play the piano, work on the computer, or do a project.
  • I can bring activities, games, or projects from home and work on them at school.
  • I can figure out how to get really good at something because there's lots of time during the day to do what I like.
  • I know I'll be ready for the adult world because our school is a lot like real life. Since no one is going to tell me when to graduate, even that I have to figure out for myself. But that's going to be exciting.

I am part of a community…

  • I like my friends, and they are all different ages.
  • If I have a problem with someone, I can write them up. I know that the JC (Judicial Committee) will listen to my case, and they'll give a fair consequence if someone breaks a rule or isn't respectful, reasonable, or responsible.
  • I like that the kids are treated as equals. We get to help make the rules of the school, decide how to spend our school money, and make our school what we want it to be for everyone.
  • I don't have to worry about what people will think about the clothes I like to wear. I can be myself at Blue Ridge Sudbury School.
  • The Staff don't tell me what to do all the time like teachers in the public schools. They listen to what I have to say, let me try different things out, and treat me like I'm capable.

My school day is my responsibility…

  • At Blue Ridge Sudbury School, I get to decide how to spend my time. If I want to build something, I can work on it for as long or as short of a time as I want.
  • I can eat my lunch whenever I want.
  • We can decide when we want to go outside and then spend as much time there as we want.
  • If I feel like being with people, I can find someone to do something with. If I want to be alone, I can.
  • My school day can be whatever I want it to be.
  • I don't have to stand in lines at school. We all move around doing what we each choose. If we stood in a line, it's only because we decided to.
  • It's not always easy to know how to spend my time. But, I would rather figure it out for myself than have someone tell me what to do all the time.

My family benefits…

  • I like that my parents trust me to pick what I like to do at school.
  • When I go home, I don't have homework from school. If there is something I want to do at home, I just do it. If there's something I want to do at school, I just do it.
